Javier Alejandro Mascherano was born on June 8, 1984 in San Lorenzo, Santa Fe, Argentina. He is Argentine soccer  who plays as a defensive midfielder or defender for Barcelona and the Argentine national team.

Mascherano started his career in Europe with Liverpool only on loan from Media Sports Investments in January 2007. A year later, in February 2008 Liverpool hired him permanently. Mascherano also holds Italian passport because he has Italian blood. He is often nicknamed El jefe ("Chairman") or Jefecito.

As of June 30, 2006, he has appeared 20 times with Argentina. Mascherano is the holder of two gold medals of olympics football. He is the first soccer player who won two Olympic soccer titles since 1928.

On August 28, 2010, he agreed terms for a four-year contract with Barcelona for £ 22 million. He then passed the examination of the medical team to complete the transfer to Barcelona on August 30, 2010.

He did his League debut on September 11, 2010, began with a 2-0 home defeat against Hércules CF promotion team which also marked the first defeat at the Camp Nou for 16 months.
